CHARLOTTE — A woman identified as Dwanneich “Dee” Hammonds was shot and killed in a parking garage at the Hazel SouthPark apartments on Barclay Downs Drive in Charlotte on Monday morning.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to the scene shortly before 7 a.m. after receiving a call about an assault with a deadly weapon.
Hammonds, 45, was found with gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital where she later died. Channel 9 learned the shooting appeared to be targeted.
“Dee was on my team,” said a former colleague and friend from a real estate company in Jacksonville, Florida. “A friend and amazingly true professional. She was on hiatus from real estate to pursue her RN profession and was planning on coming back to our team and real estate.”
Hammonds was a single mother and was working toward becoming a registered nurse and volunteered to help kids, the friend said. She had recently moved to Charlotte from Florida.
According to her social media, she was originally from New York and had worked at a Fortune 100 financial company for 12 years.
Hammonds was a “foody” and loved to travel.
“She will be truly missed and remembered,” her friend said.
The investigation
Residents reported that the shooting took place in the apartment’s parking garage. Detectives are investigating whether the shooter gained access to the complex through a door that was supposed to be locked but wasn’t.
Channel 9 reached out to the Hazel SouthPark apartment complex to inquire about potential security failures but were advised to call back when a manager was available.
As of Tuesday, no suspect information has been released, and the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting continues.
“May justice be served for her,” Hammonds’ friend said.
No additional details have been made available.
