Clover School District opens 3 new schools to combat overcrowding

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — The Clover School District opened three new schools today, Roosevelt Middle School, Liberty Elementary and Lake Wylie High School, following years of planning and a $156 million financial investment.

“I just think it’s an important day for the Clover School District,” said Ginger Marr, director of Community Engagement at CSD. “It’s historic, obviously. It’s monumental in terms of opening three schools in one year is unheard of.”

The new facilities were built to address significant overcrowding that has impacted the district for several years.

The expansion comes in response to a 2022 space crisis that saw hundreds of new students join the district, leading to congested hallways and safety concerns at Clover High School.

District leaders believe the new buildings will alleviate these capacity issues and provide much-needed space for the growing student body.

In 2022, Clover High School experienced significant congestion as hundreds of new students enrolled in the district.

The hallways became so crowded that students expressed concerns regarding their safety during potential emergencies.

At that time, the district superintendent issued a warning that Clover schools would exhaust all available middle and high school space within three years if no infrastructure changes were made.

The funding for the new facilities was secured in late 2022 when voters approved a $156 million bond.

In addition to the bond revenue, school board leaders utilized district savings and impact fees to cover the costs of the multi-year planning and construction projects.

Officials stated that these new buildings are expected to make a difference in managing the district’s growing student population.

Parents and students gathered at the new campuses for the start of the academic year.

Kiante Wingate was among the parents at Roosevelt Middle School, where he dropped his son off to a grand welcome from staff and administrators.

“So this right here is just phenomenal,” Wingate said. “I’ll just tell them I’m saying he’s a part of history. I just told them that.”

Roosevelt Middle School is one of the three new facilities designed to alleviate the pressure on existing district buildings.
