Breast cancer survivors paint pit wall pink at Charlotte Motor Speedway

CHARLOTTE — NASCAR driver Erik Jones joined breast cancer survivors on Tuesday to paint the pit wall pink at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

This is ahead of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month that starts Wednesday.

“I think cancer has probably touched most people, probably in some way, through family or friend,” Jones said. “They’ve known someone who’s went through that battle.”

More than 100 breast cancer survivors gathered at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“(I) feel like a strong, thriving, surviving pink warrior,” said Lucy Burke, breast cancer survivor. “I am a nine-and-a-half-year breast cancer survivor.”

The annual event is ahead of this weekend’s Bank of America Roval 400 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“My mom’s a breast cancer survivor,” Jones said. “She went through a battle about 10 years ago, a little over and so it’s near and dear to my heart, in a lot of ways.”

It’s a large focus of his foundation, which his mom, now cancer-free, is involved in.

“In my case, it was a self-exam that found my breast cancer,” said Carol Jones, breast cancer survivor. “It just goes to show that education and early detection is very important and can save many, many lives.”

Lives were celebrated at the speedway and will continue to be celebrated all weekend long.

“I’m still surviving and thriving and doing well and as they say, living my best life,” Burke said.
