CHARLOTTE — A family can’t go back inside their southwest Charlotte home after a driver crashed through a fence and into their living room Thursday morning.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. on Cama Street just off South Tryon Street.
Neighbors told Channel 9’s Miana Massey the driver came from the main road, crashed through a fence and into the home, ripping an awning off and scattering a couch, table, and even a bicycle across the front lawn.
The Jeep Wagoneer was wedged inside the home, and a notice was posted on the front door of the home that says the building is unsafe to go back into.
One neighbor said she saw a young boy running from the house just moments after the crash.
Another neighbor said the impact jolted him awake.
“I woke up to this loud bang, and I heard all of this shrapnel all over their yard,” next-door-neighbor Thomas Briggs said. “I came outside and the police and fire department were here. I looked to my right and say the car in the house, so I went over the make sure everyone was alright.”
Fortunately, MEDIC said no one was hurt.
A family member stopped by this morning to pick up some things and shared that one of the men who lives here is a disabled veteran.
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed the Red Cross will be assisting the resident of the home.
Channel 9 is asking police how this happened and for more information about the driver.
