Caldwell County commissioners’ fight sparks public concern

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Two Caldwell County commissioners got into a fight Wednedsay minutes before their recent meeting.

The two apologized afterward at the packed meeting , which included students and families from South Caldwell High School, who were being honored.

“Gentleman’s disagreement and I hope this is a lesson,” said Commissioner Jeff Branch. “There are more ways to settle an argument then pulling out a gun or knife.”

“We don’t always agree but we need to learn to settle our disagreements in a professional manner,” said Commissioner Donnie Potter.

Residents across the county contacted Channel 9’s Dave Faherty about their concerns.

“Handle it a more civilized manner. Discuss it, which is what we voted for them to do,” said resident Charlie Wiedey.

“I think it’s terrible. It’s childish,” said Anne Echard, another citizen.

The incident was considered a simple assault, according to a police report.

Faherty reached out to both county commissioners about the reason for the fight but he hasn’t gotten that answer yet.

Security camera may have captured the fight and Channel 9 is trying to get it.
