Cabinet shop owner says contractor stiffed her out of $6,300

CHARLOTTE — Cabinets come in different colors, including Avalon, sterling, and soda but something else was bubbling at the Jarlin Cabinetry store in west Charlotte, Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke reported.

Owner Mandy Lyles says a contractor came in and bought more than $6,300 in cabinets or so she thought.

A few days later, she showed Stoogenke paperwork showing insufficient funds.

“It is really hard to be out $6,000 because it’s a very low-profit margin so to have to absorb something like that, really puts a hurt on our family and the people that work for us,” Lyles said.

“When it did not clear, we began reaching out immediately,” she said.

Months passed and the contractor didn’t pay, she said. Channel 9 isn’t naming the contractor since he hasn’t been charged.

Lyles filed a police report and reached out to Stoogenke. He tried to get in touch with the contractor in multiple ways. He didn’t respond in time for this report.

After Action 9′s fourth attempt and about three months later, Lyles says the money bounced and $6,300 showed up in her account.

She does what many companies do.

She allows business customers to pay electronically using Automated Clearing House, which is like Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle but for businesses, Stoogenke said. The group that runs the platform, NACHA, counted almost 27 billion payments in a recent year for a total of almost $62 trillion.

However, payments can take a few days to clear and according to multiple sources, it can be up to three business days.

Companies want to make life easier for their customers and convenience is good for business, but Lyles says now, she’ll wait a few days to ensure payments are cleared before letting a new client walk away with her product.
