YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Tony Breeden, the new sheriff of York County, has prioritized understanding the culture of the sheriff’s office as he begins his tenure.
Breeden, who has been in the position for two weeks, emphasizes the importance of learning about the people and the environment he now leads.
“Since I’ve been here it’s even more humbling than you can describe,” Breeden said, reflecting on his early days in office. “I didn’t have any preconceived notions on the state of the agency. I just came in and learned everybody,” Breeden explained, highlighting his approach to leadership.
Breeden has outlined several objectives for his tenure, including expanding the traffic unit to address high-traffic areas and increasing the number of officers in the drug enforcement unit. He also plans to enhance the visibility of law enforcement in the community.
“I’ve told them we want to expand that as much as anyone has ever seen.. involvement in the community. Making sure we’re visible,” Breeden stated, underscoring his commitment to community engagement.
Breeden also aims to set higher expectations for law enforcement officers to ensure trust in the sheriff’s office.
“I don’t want anyone to see a deputy and not see anything other than confidence in what we’re doing,” he said.
As Breeden settles into his role, his focus on culture and community visibility is expected to shape the future of law enforcement in York County.
His leadership approach emphasizes understanding and collaboration within the sheriff’s office.
