Bill filed in NC could change how sports bettors are taxed

RALEIGH, N.C. — Sports bettors in North Carolina could see a buzzer-beating change that could bring them relief this tax season.

A new bill filed this week in Raleigh would allow a state income deduction for gambling losses against people’s winnings. The current law states bettors have to pay taxes on their winnings regardless of overall earnings. If it passes, it would be effective this tax year, based on the reading of the bill.

This is the first tax season since sports betting has become legal in North Carolina. It launched last March. Raleigh Republican Erin Page introduced a bill that would allow the tax deduction. A similar exemption already exists for federal taxes, but the amount of losses can’t exceed the amount of winnings.

Page says the point of House Bill 14 is to prevent surprise tax bills and confusion. The bill has passed its first reading and will head to a committee.
