Amazon Web Services outage disrupts major platforms and local businesses

CHARLOTTE — Amazon Web Services experienced a widespread outage today, affecting various services and businesses across the country.

The outage impacted major platforms such as Snapchat and Ring, as well as local businesses in areas like South End.

“Woke up this morning, saw an email saying Toast systems are down, which is our POS system,” said Chris Singleton, manager of Vinyl in South End.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District informed families that some students and staff might be unable to log in through ClassLink due to the outage.

UNC-Charlotte also reported that its Canvas system was down because of challenges with Amazon Web Services.

Connor Schlosser, manager at Folia Cocktail Lounge and Coffee Bar, noted they could still process orders but faced issues with clocking in and accessing sales information.

The outage also disrupted payment apps like Venmo, affecting workers in the style industry who rely on these apps for tips and payments.

As Amazon works to restore its web services, businesses and individuals continue to navigate the challenges posed by the outage.
