2 dead, 2 hurt after house fire in east Charlotte, officials say

CHARLOTTE — Two people were killed and two were hurt in a house fire in east Charlotte on Saturday morning, according to officials.

The fire broke out at a home along Donnefield Drive just after 7 a.m. Firefighters battled heavy smoke and fire when they arrived on scene.

MEDIC said they took two people to the hospital from the scene, with one treated for minor injuries and the other life-threatening. Once firefighters got into the home, they were met with extreme hoarding conditions inside, according to a release. They later found two people dead inside the home after it was safe to enter.

“Our firefighters worked tirelessly under extremely hazardous conditions to bring this fire under control,” said Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson. “This tragic loss of life is deeply felt by our department and the community. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families.”

Charlotte Fire said one of those patients was a resident who was self-extricated from the home and was evaluated for smoke inhalation. The other patient was a firefighter who was taken to the hospital out of caution after suffering injuries while battling the fire.

The fire was controlled in 90 minutes and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
