16-year-old killed in northeast Charlotte shooting

CHARLOTTE — A teenager was gunned down in a deadly shooting that took place early this morning in northeast Charlotte.

The victim’s family told Channel 9’s Glenn Counts that the teen was killed in a drive-by shooting that also endangered his aunt, who was with him at the time of the incident.

“He cared a lot for his siblings. He helped his mom a lot with his younger siblings,” said Christy Ross, the victim’s cousin. “He was the oldest boy.”

Ross said they’re a close-knit family and that her cousin’s death “really hurts.”

“He was only 16-years-old,” said Ross. “Had his whole life ahead of him.”

Police said the shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The family said the teen was outside their family home in the 300 block of Lambeth Drive along with his aunt when suspects opened fire.

He was able to drag himself inside the home and was taken to the hospital where he passed away.

“Everybody is distraught. It’s hard,” Ross said. “Even his little sister had to witness him laying in the floor with a bullet hole in his chest. Now that’s something she is going to always remember.”

The teen was a rising junior at Julius Chambers High School and was looking forward to the start of school.

Police have not said anything about the circumstances of the shooting. No arrest have been made and police have encouraged those with information about the incident to give them a call.

No additional details have been made available.
