CHARLOTTE — One person was shot and killed early Thursday afternoon in southeast Charlotte, MEDIC said.
It happened at the Wallace Woods apartments on Wallace Road, which is between East Independence Boulevard and Monroe Road.
The victim was lying in the parking lot.
Neighbors heard several shots and then saw people running away.
“Every one of these is tragic,” said CMPD Maj. Ryan Kendall. “I wish we didn’t have to respond to one of these.”
No arrests have been made, and police said it’s too early to release the victim’s name.
The shooting happened hours after CMPD held a news conference where top brass applauded a 38% decrease in homicides so far this year.
There were 20 homicides from January through March. There were 32 during the same time last year.
“We say crime is down, let’s double down,” said Dep. Chief David Robinson. “That’s what we are here to do. One crime is one too many.
The overall crime rate is down about 6% in Charlotte, including a 17% decrease in violent crimes.
Wallace Woods apartments is no stranger to violent crime.
A one-year-old was shot and killed there in June 2022.
Two months later, a 4-year-old boy was shot in a drive-by. After surgery, he survived.
No additional details have been made available.
