Troopers said a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling south early Tuesday when it collided with a 2021 Hyundai Kona that was sitting sideways in the roadway, with no lights on, due to a previous crash.
The driver of the Hyundai, 26-year-old Justyn Jack Jenkins, was pronounced dead at the scene, highway patrol said. The driver of the Freightliner, 58-year-old Hartford Leon Cunningham, was not injured.
Troopers said the initial investigation indicates that speed and impairment were not contributing factors in the crash. No charges will be filed in this case, troopers said.
Traffic was diverted from the interstate at Langtree Road in Mooresville while crews worked to clear the scene for hours Tuesday morning.
Shortly after the initial collision was cleared, a second crash occurred in the same area, leading to another closure of the interstate. All lanes have since reopened.
