1 injured in targeted shooting outside Carolina Place Mall, police say

PINEVILLE, N.C. — A shooting outside Carolina Place Mall in Pineville this evening left one person injured in what police describe as a targeted incident following an arranged meeting.

The incident took place around 6:45 p.m. in the parking lot between Barnes & Noble and the food court.

A Pineville officer was nearby on another call when he heard a gunshot and responded immediately, finding a victim with a gunshot wound to the leg.

“He heard one shot, responded to the scene, and found a victim with a gunshot wound to the leg; he immediately applied a tourniquet to the leg,” said Pineville Police Chief Michael Hudgins.

Shoppers exiting the mall were met with crime scene tape and numerous police vehicles.

Amanda Dobson, a frequent shopper at Carolina Place Mall, expressed confusion over the situation, while Gabriela Gonzales noted the lack of panic among shoppers.

Hudgins confirmed that the crime was not random, indicating that the meeting was arranged and led to a fight and shooting.

“It does appear that the crime was targeted based on the information I have at this time,” he stated.

Despite the incident, Hudgins reassured the public about the mall’s safety, citing data that shows Carolina Place Mall as one of the safest in the region.

“Yes, it’s concerning, and yes, we’re going to do our best to resolve this,” he said.

Police are actively searching for the suspects by reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses.

At this time, it is unclear whether the parties involved knew each other, but police are certain the incident was a setup.
