Woman rescued after tree falls onto east Charlotte apartment complex

CHARLOTTE — A woman is recovering in the hospital after a tree fell onto an apartment complex in east Charlotte, trapping her and damaging multiple units.

The incident occurred around 3 o’clock Friday afternoon at the Oasis at Regal Oaks, where residents heard a loud noise as the tree smashed into the building.

Elizabeth Cordero, a neighbor who lives in the apartment building next door, heard cries for help and called 911.

“I could definitely tell she was hurt,” Cordero said, noting that the woman said she couldn’t breathe and something was crushing her arm.

Andreana Martinez, a resident, described the terrifying moment when she and her husband saw a branch crash through their living room wall.

“I look at my ceiling; everything, everything, everything shakes...shake, shake, shake,” Martinez recalled.

The fire department arrived quickly and was able to rescue the woman.

Battalion Chief Tristan Durban noted the bravery of another neighbor who attempted to reach the trapped woman before firefighters arrived. “Thank goodness for good neighbors,” he said.

The Red Cross is assisting at least four families with housing following the incident.

While the woman’s current condition is unknown, her neighbors remain hopeful for her recovery.

The community’s quick response and the assistance from the Red Cross highlight the resilience and support among the residents.
