1 hurt after Delta regional jets collide at LaGuardia Airport

NEW YORK — One person is hurt after a flight from Charlotte collided with another plane on the tarmac at New York’s LaGuardia Airport Wednesday night.

Investigators say a Delta CRJ-900 regional jet struck another of the same type of plane around 10 p.m. One flight was preparing to depart for Roanoke, Virginia, when its wing slammed into the cockpit window of another, smashing the glass.

The frightening collision left one crew member hurt and dozens of travelers stranded in New York.

“A plane came from the left. You could see it coming fast,” William Lusk, a passenger on the plane, said. “Its right wing clipped the nose of our plane. The plane stopped, jerked and jumped to the right. Everyone was dead silent.”

The airline confirmed the flight from Charlotte had 57 people on board while 28 passengers were on the plane headed to Roanoke.

“Our plane seemed to be OK,” Lusk said. “Everyone had emotional and psychological damage.”

Reports show a flight attendant was taken to the hospital with a minor knee injury and is expected to be alright.

Both planes were operated by Endeavor Air, a regional carrier for Delta.

In response to the incident, Delta said: ”Delta teams at our New York-LaGuardia hub are working to ensure our customers are taken care of after two Delta Connection aircraft operated by Endeavor Air were involved in a low-speed collision during taxi. Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience."

The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into exactly how this happened.
