CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Fire Department reported a structure fire in the 300 block of E Morehead Street Saturday morning.
Witnesses reported seeing a large plume of smoke from I-277 and beyond.
Firefighters were first dispatched around 7:45 a.m. Four engines responded, according to CFD.
The department posted on X that a second alarm was called out around 8 a.m. The third alarm was struck around 8:40 a.m.
The building was evacuated by firefighters just after 8 a.m. Officials said a roof collapse was imminent and structural integrity was compromised.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department closed Morehead Street from Euclid Avenue to S. Tryon Street for several hours.
MEDIC reported no transports to the hospital.
Charlotte Fire told Channel 9′s Gina Esposito that the fire gutted the Morehead Tavern.
The blaze also shut down the Blue Line. Charlotte Are Transit System reopened one Blue Line track in the afternoon, but the track was still covered in mud and water.
CFD reported that the fire was controlled in two and a half hours at 10:23 a.m.
Morehead Street remains closed, according to officials, as firefighters are still working to extract debris and extinguish hot spots.
No injuries have been reported for civilians or firefighters.
CFD’s Fire Investigation task force is working to determine the cause of the fire.
